Purpose of a Study Permit

A Study Permit is the official document issued by an officer that allows someone who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to study in Canada. 

 

Entry requirements

  • You must have been accepted  at a recognized school, university or college in Canada.
  • You must be able to prove that you have enough money to pay for:
    • Tuition fees
    • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
    • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
  • You must be a law abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate.
  • You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
  • You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when you have completed your studies.

 

How to Apply for a Study permit

  • Check the application processing times. 
  • Obtain and print the application.
  • Determine where to submit your application.
  • Collect documents you may need to apply.
  • Complete your application for a study permit.
  • Pay the correct processing fee.
  • Check your application.
  • Submit the application form.
  • Supply additional information and documents. 


What to submit

  • Proof of acceptance at a recognized university, college or school in Canada.
  • Proof of identity:
    • Valid passport of travel document.
    • two recent passport-size photos of you and your accompanying family.
  • Proof of financial support
    • evidence can include some of the following:
      • proof of a Canadian bank account in your name if money has been transferred to Canada;
      • your bank statements for the past four months'
      • a bank-draft in convertible currency;
      • proof of payment of tuition;
      • a letter from the person/institution providing you with money

Permit fees

Nationals of certain countries are subject to visa fees. Fees are levied per application and are not refundable should the application be refused.
